What is Periodontal Disease?

If you’re suffering from bleeding, red, swollen, tender gums, gums that are pulled away from the teeth, persistent bad breath, loose teeth or a change in the fit of partial dentures, it is probably due to periodontal disease.

Periodontitis is a chronic gum disease that can cause teeth to loosen and lead to teeth loss. Many experienced and eminent periodontists have observed that the prevalence of the periodontal disease increases as we age.

Periodontitis is an advanced stage of gingivitis (mild, reversible form of gum irritation) that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth. Tissue destruction from periodontitis is irreversible but the progress of the gum disease can be halted and prevented.

Research studies have identified Periodontitis as a risk factor that can complicate other serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory ailments and the delivery of pre-term babies with low birth weight.

Why Periodontists at Langley Dental Centre, Langley BC?

Considering the seriousness of periodontal diseases, a visit to the periodontist becomes inevitable. Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases. These professionals are trained to make sure that your gums, jawbone, and connective gum tissue are in optimal health.

After completion of the regular dental school, the periodontist receives three years of specialized training in periodontology. The specialization focuses primarily on gum and tooth health. The specialists are also trained in placement of dental implants, perform jaw and gum surgery, and treat cancerous gums.

Our patients at Langley Dental Centre are initially reviewed by our general dentists and accordingly referred to expert periodontists. Our gum specialists are well-equipped with the latest tools and techniques to perform gum surgeries (flap surgery or bone & tissue grafts) or therapies (SRP – Scaling and Root Planing), as required. Our periodontists are known to bring out the best results with their highest quality care to help you combat periodontal diseases and have a healthy mouth.

We use state-of-the-art technologies such as digital imaging and lasers to treat our patients to bring out the best results.

What can I expect during my visit to Langley Dental Centre at Langley BC?

During your regular dental checkup visits to our dental office, or when you visit our office with gum or dental problems,  our dentist will evaluate your oral health, learn about your medical history to identify underlying conditions or risk factors (such as smoking) that may contribute to gum disease. An x-ray may also be advised depending on the damage caused to your gums or teeth, if necessary.

The routine teeth cleaning is completed by our board-certified, friendly and gentle hygienists, who also take care to guide you with the correct techniques of brushing your teeth.

As needed, you will then be referred to a periodontist who will assess your oral health, learn about any specific habits (smoking, poor oral hygiene) diabetes, etc. and note any signs of inflammation. Based on the assessment he/she will accordingly anticipate future gum and tooth issues, treat current gum problems and restore tissue health.

Treatment: The periodontist may use advanced technology such as laser therapy, as required. The dental laser is used to access and remove the inflamed gum tissue from around the root of the tooth and expose the root for scaling. Scaling scrapes off the calculus and plaque built up below the gum line and around the root. The root is then smoothened using instruments to prevent future infections.

Laser therapy helps target the diseased areas precisely and accurately, limiting bleeding, pain and swelling as it is less invasive unlike the regular surgery; the recovery and healing time is also shorter.

We advise you to come prepared with any questions you may have, so that our friendly staff can answer all your queries to ensure you have a better understanding of your tooth or gum condition and the prescribed treatment. We also advise our patients post-treatment care – to practice specific healthy oral hygiene habits which determines the patient’s future oral health.

Clinic Ambience: Langley Dental Centre has a relaxing and hygienic ambience, friendly staff who care about our patients’ comfort, safety and security. The office maintains golden standards for sterilization clinical protocols.

Expertise: Our periodontists excel in performing complex gum surgeries to restore your teeth and gum health. Our patients spend much less time in the chair as we use the latest techniques for effective and precise treatment outcomes, making our patients comfortable. We offer our patients the various treatment options available and help you make an informed decision.

Appointments: Depending on the individual’s gum or teeth condition, presence or absence of infection, our patients are scheduled for one or more appointments for the professional teeth cleaning.

Post Treatment Care: Once the periodontal therapy is completed, your teeth need periodic examination and professional teeth cleaning, usually every 6 – 12 months to prevent recurrence of the gum infection. During these checkup visits, we will assess gum healing with the help of x-rays.  You will receive a communication from us by email, to schedule your evaluation visit.

Insurance: Regular visits to the dentist’s office for professional teeth cleaning once in six months can help prevent the need for more extensive treatment. We accept all health and dental insurance plans for your treatment and for routine teeth cleanings.
